Overview

The Framework Laptop 13 is a modular, repairable laptop that has become the go-to recommendation for Linux users who want a reliable daily driver. Framework actively collaborates with the Linux community and ships some configurations with Ubuntu or Fedora pre-installed.

Linux Compatibility

Linux support is first-class. Framework maintains official documentation for Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, and NixOS. On recent AMD Ryzen and Intel Core Ultra configurations:

  • WiFi — Intel AX210 works out of the box on kernel 5.17+
  • Bluetooth — fully functional
  • Suspend / resume — works reliably (historically a weak point on Linux laptops)
  • Fingerprint reader — works via fprintd on supported configurations
  • Webcam — standard UVC, works everywhere
  • Function keys — all work, including brightness and keyboard backlight

The AMD Ryzen 7040 series in particular gets excellent Linux performance with fully open-source drivers.

Repairability

Framework publishes repair guides for every component. The expansion card system (USB-A, USB-C, HDMI, DisplayPort, SD card, SSD) lets you configure your ports and swap them at any time. RAM and storage are standard and user-upgradeable.

Build Quality

The aluminum chassis feels solid and premium. The display is matte (IPS) and comfortable for long sessions. Keyboard feel is good for a thin laptop.

Battery Life

With AMD Ryzen 7040, real-world battery life is 8–10 hours on Linux with power management tuned (e.g., power-profiles-daemon or tlp). A significant improvement over earlier Intel generations.

Who It's For

The Framework 13 is ideal for:

  • Linux users who want a guaranteed-compatible daily driver
  • People who want to repair or upgrade their own hardware
  • Those who want to avoid proprietary hardware with poor Linux support

Verdict

The Framework Laptop 13 AMD is my top laptop recommendation for Linux users. It combines excellent hardware compatibility, repairability, and a company that genuinely engages with the Linux community. The price is competitive with other premium thin-and-lights.
